V.P. Filatov Research Institute of Eye Diseases and
Tissue Therapy known as one of the leading
Europian ophthalmological centres.
The Institute was founded in 1936 by academician V.P. Filatov, the famous ophthalmologist well-known all over the world by his works on cornea transplantation, the founder of an original method of non-specific treatment-tissue therapy.
The Filatov Institute is situated in a picturesque area of Odessa, city-resort on the Black Sea, with almost one million inhabitants.
Every year thousand of patients from all FSU republics and abroad are examined and treated at the outpatient department of the Institute and at its eight clinical departments
with 500 beds in total, thousands of microsurgical operations are performed yearly.
22 professors, doctors of Medical Science, 50 candidates of Science, biologists, biochemists, doctors of other specialities perform extensive curative and research work on the most urgent problems of ophthalmology at such laboratories as:

The Filatov Institute provides treatment for persons from abroad and other services on examination and consultation of patients with the main eye pathology: abnormality of refraction, diseases of the
eyelids and lacrimal organs, pathology of the cornea, diseases of choroidal tract, pathology of the lens, glaucoma, diseases of the retina and optic nerve, eye-burns and eye traumas and their sequelae, diseases of the orbit, disturbances of oculomotor apparatus in children and adults.
The consultation is conducted by highly experienced ophthalmologists having at their disposal uptodate methods for diagnosis of eye diseases.
The Filatov Institute informs persons wishing to have consultation and treatment that it is inexpedient to apply to the Institute for those with the absence of light perception or incorrect light projection in the sick eye as well as for those suffering from severe somatic diseases, such as diabetes of severe degree, collagenosis, polyarthrosis, nephritis, hepatitis, dermatosis, psychopathy, dementia, chronic alcoholism, narcomania.
After consultation at the Institute, the patient can undergo surgical or medicamentous treatment (on indications) on an outpatient basis (the patient has to stay at the Institute only for the duration of surgical intervention or medicamentous procedures) in the following cases:
The Filatov Institute offers foreign patients one- or
four-week staying in two- or four-
bedrooms for the following types of treatment at the clinical department depending on the category of complexity of eye pathology:
- optic penetrating and lamellar transplantation of donor cornea;
- curative keratoplasty;
- transplantation of artificial cornea-keratoprosthesing;
- extraction of senile, traumatic, congenital cataracts, including intraocular lens implantation
- reconstructive operations on occasion of various injuries of the iris;
- removal of adhesions between eyelids and the eye ball after eye burn;
- extraction of intraocular foreign bodies;
- antiglaucomatous operations;
- retinal detachment surgery with vitrectomy;
- surgical reconstruction of the conjunctival cavity for the wear of prosthesis;
- treatment of inflammatory diseases of the retina, the choroid of the eye and the optic nerve;
- surgical correction of congenital and acquired ptosis;
- surgical correction of pterygium with cornea transplantation.
